That a stable dollar would be a great advantage is
admitted, but we cannot adopt that in haste if it is
to have an adverse effect on Hong Kong's trade vis-à-
vis China. I hope to send the report of the Committee
home soon for expert investigation.
I see that Shiels made a statement in the House
the other day, which might be interpreted as meaning
that I agree with a policy of total abolition of
brothels. I am afraid that that is not the case, though
I may have said that Goverment might be forced by the
League of Nations, or some such body, to adopt such a
policy. Personally, I am against it in Eastern colonies
and have always felt convinced that the effect of such
a policy would be for the worse. It is a question on
which I could say more, but will leave it alone for
the present. It is a question where both the General
and the Admiral should be consulted, and I trust that
it may be possible to stave off abolition, at all events
until we have seen what the effects of such a policy in
Malaya are. I discussed it with Sir Shouson Chow the
other day, and he made some sly but apposite digs at
London!
